What do the numbers really mean?
Many media outlets are happy to use emotional language to sway readers toward one opinion or another. But at the same time, they and their more objective counterparts both throw out numeric facts like disposable tissues, there out of immediate necessity but quickly tossed out and forgotten. Of course all information has value, but journalists usually don't put forth the extra effort to demonstrate the world behind those numbers. And without perspective, the numbers are somewhat meaningless.
For example, I keep reading about escalating death toll statistics regarding the Myanmar cyclone Nargis. The most recent estimate I've heard is that approximately 78,000 people are believed to have been killed as the cyclone swept over the Burmese landscape. I've been trying to figure out how many people this really is and what kind of tragedy that loss must be to this country. But 78,000 is a hard number to translate into people, especially people having been killed in a natural disaster. I tried to picture one person I know being lost, a devastating thought, and then multiply that by 10, by 100, by 1000. I'm already detached from the scope of that scenario. I don't even know 1000 people intimately, so it's impossible to have an idea of losing that many people at once. Then I got another idea. What if we took a picture of each person that perished and showed it on a large screen for approximately 5 seconds. After 5 seconds were up, the next person's picture would flash onto the screen for another 5 seconds, and so on. It's like a picture memorial for the lost people of Myanmar. Let's do a little math for this scenario:
60 sec/min \ 5 sec/person = 12 people/min
60 min/hour x 12 people/hour = 720 people/hour
78,000 total people \ 720 people/hour = 108.3 total hours
108.3 total hours \ 24 hour/day = ~4.5 total days
Basically, the slideshow memorial showing a picture of each victim of hurricane Nargis would run night and day for 4.5 days before completing a single cycle of the images. Imagine sitting night and day for 4.5 days and watching image after image of Myanmar citizens, actual men, women and children, all lost in a powerful storm. Knowing that 78,000 people have died sounds terrible, but imagining seeing the face of each victim over a continuous 4.5 day duration really makes me shocked and sad. Then I thought of one more way to help realize the extent of the casualties in Myanmar, an example even more visual than the slideshow memorial. Each symbol below represents one Myanmar citizen/victim of the Nargis storm. They all look the same as a group, but if you go row by row, maybe you can imagine that some are men, some women, some children, and that each has a little bit different story of how they lived and how they died.
